Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a small wine region in the northeastern corner of Italy. Bordering Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, Friuli is both culturally and historically rich. For centuries, northern European and Near Eastern tribes moved through the region on their way to the Mediterranean, and today the region seems just as much slovanian as it it does Italian. As far as the wines go, Friuli is acclaimed as one of the top places in the world for racy whites and stunning reds. Friuli’s pinot grigios, sauvignion blancs, and ribolla giallas (Jared’s favorite), are some of the most refreshing, crisp, and stunning single-varietal whites in the world. The reds are sure to impress as well. With Refosco, Merlot, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir growng in the warmer pockets of this mountainous region, Friuli will impress the American palate as much as the European. While most of the vineyards in the region are located in the southern plains (just like the Veneto), the best are situated on sloping Alpine foothills. To learn more about this unique, and often under-represented region, please join us on August 24th.
While Slovenia is not as well know of a wine region as Friuli, the two regions have much in common including climate, geography history, and the ablity to produce amazing wines. Often called ‘The Green Treasure of Europe,” half of Slovenia is covered in forest. This seminar will focus on the western Slovanian wine region of Primorska which hugs the Italian border and the Adriatic coastline. Those of you who attend this event will have a lot of fun with Movia Puro, which is a sparkling wine that we have to open underwater. Don’t miss out!
